World Physiotherapy Day- 8th September The World Physiotherapy Day as per the World Health Organization is to be celebrated On 8th September 2011, The day marks the unity and solidarity of the physical therapy community, It is an opportunity to recognize the work that physical therapists do for their patients and community. Physiotherapy or Physical therapy is a health care profession which includes examination, treatment, advice and instructions to any person preparatory to or for purpose or in connection with movement dysfunction, body malfunction, physical disorder, healing, pain from trauma, diseases from physical and mental conditions using physical agents including exercise, mobilization, manipulation, mechanical and electro therapy, usage of devices for diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure of medical problems. The first record of American Physiotherapy at Walter Reed College and hospital of Portland. The polio epidemic of the 1920 was a landmark turning point for the physiotherapy profession. In 1921 Mary macmilian formed the Physical Therapy Association in the USA. Subsequently renamed the APTA. A significant role in the recent evolution of physiotherapy has been the International Federation Of Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy, Notable individuals driving change in technique and training have included Mario Rocabado (Chilie), Freddy Kaltenborn (Norway/Sweden) and Geoffrey Maitland (Australia). During 1980, technology became the focus change in physiotherapy, Novel procedures featured computers, electrical stimulators, ultrasound, LASER and other new equipments are introduced. How ever the specializations like Manual Therapy, Neurology, Cardio–Respiratory, Sports, Geriatrics, Kinesiology, visceral organ manipulations to treat patients with dysfunctional disorders. Research continues actively today in wide range of specialties. According to World Health Organization, Every 10,000 population may need at least one qualified Physiotherapist, The Indian Population is 120 Crores we can imagine need of physiotherapists in India. It is estimated that about 10% of the population of the world is suffering from physical disability in one way or other. In India many people are becoming physically challenged because of ignorance of preventive therapy. In India there are 1,50,000 Primary healthcare centers and approx 30,000 Hospitals but still there is huge demand in Bed –Patient Ratio. The Scope and need of physiotherapist is huge to serve the rural population of India. The physiotherapist can work at Hospitals, Teaching Institutes, Research Institutes, Wellness Centers, Ayurvedic Speciality Hospitals, Sports, Corporate Firms, Fitness Centers. Physiotherapy can consider as an important branch of medical sciences all over the world.
